Ottumwa youth football looking for increased turnout in 2017 - Ottumwacourier

OTTUMWA — From a day at The Beach to a second of flag football, the Ottumwa Youth Football league is doing whatever it takes to produce a very successful 2017 season.

Participants in the upcoming season of both tackle and flag football took part this week in camps held on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Schafer Stadium practice field. Rich Mayson, head coach of the Ottumwa High School Bulldogs, got a kick out of watching several current Bulldog football players become the coaches on the gridiron for the OYFL players.

"I enjoy watching our guys step into the shoes of the coaches and try and teach the drills. I think that's good for them in the long run," Mayson said. "Sometimes they learn just how frustrating it can be to know what you want the kids to do and yet not be able to get them to do it."

With an eye toward rebuilding the OHS football program into the consistent winner it once was, Mayson is looking toward the OYFL as the place to begin building a love...
